Secret Valentine

Objectives
  • Celebrate Valentines Day
  • Community building
  • Encourage positive interactions between residents

Summary
Secret Valentines were created to celebrate Valentines Day. They are an anonymous way for residents to do something positive for others. It can generate better inter-resident relationships and help build community. This program doesn't have to be solely Valentines Day, it can be adapted for Christmas, Easter, Summer and Winter Solstice, whatever you think will work.

Instructions
Space
You could create little pockets on their community shelf/cupboard for ongoing gifts or just make a gift giving spot.

Supplies
  • Paper for pockets
  • Up to the gift giver

Funding
Funded personally by the residents and it's usually best to put a cap on how much money is allowed to be spent.

Step by Step
  1. Introduce the idea at a house meeting or community dinner.
  2. If your residents like the idea draw names from a hat
  3. Specify what the rules of the gift giving are. Will it be one gift by a certain date? Multiple kind acts and then a gift over the course of a week? How much money? etc.
  4. Make sure everyone has been properly distributed.
  5. Let it happen.
  6. Come back for the final gift giving or just thank everyone at the next house meeting.

Results
Residents liked the idea and were very excited to start the secret valentine. It created a really awesome atmosphere in the house and, because it was anonymous, the thankful feelings were expanded to the entire house community.
