Water Balloon Ice Breaker

Objectives
  • To build community
  • A chance for residents to get to know each other
  • Active participation
  • Fun

Summary
This ice breaker allowed people to get to know each other without sitting in an awkward circle. It was implemented during Week One of Fall Term and was a lot of fun.

Instructions
Space
Outside is best, ideally where there is mainly grass because of the running involved.

Supplies
  • Tonnes of water balloons
  • A few water guns
Funding
Fund this however you need. It only cost $10 for 500 water balloons.

Step by Step
  1. Buy supplies (Amazon sells cheap water balloons in bulk)
  2. Gather boxes/buckets
  3. Fill water balloons and store in boxes/buckets. (Chem Lab has tapered faucets)
  4. Move all supplies to chosen grass area
  5. Split up into two teams and make sure to explain not to throw balloons in people's faces
  6. Begin the WAR!
Results
This was a great bonding activity. It helped break the ice because it was during week one. People got a chance to be silly and get to know each other in a fun way - sometimes sitting around and asking "ice breaker" questions can be too formal and awkward.
